K-9 Dutch joined the K-9 program of the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office in April of 2020. K-9 Oz joined the program in August of 2022. The Legacy Foundation has provided funds to secure essential equipment for the K-9 program as well as assist in the purchase of K-9 Dutch.

Since the inception of the program, the K-9’s have been deployed over 225 times for narcotics related sniffs. These sniffs include vehicles, residences, parcels at the Post Office, airplanes, and other buildings around Cascade County. Both K-9’s have been requested by other County agencies for assistance. We work closely with the Russell Country Drug Task Force, which is composed of members of local Law Enforcement as well as Federal Agencies.

From the 225+ deployments, both K-9 Dutch and K-9 Oz assisted with the seizure of over 5,661 grams of methamphetamine, 711 grams of cocaine, and 243 grams of heroin. Along with these narcotics, 3,704 scheduled pills (to include 3,443 fentanyl) were seized throughout various investigations. Over $67,800 US Currency was also seized among these investigations.

K-9 Cade is an Electronic Scent Detection (ESD) K-9 who has served with the Cascade County Sheriff's Office for 4 years.  K-9 Cade was provided to our office through a grant and was the first ESD K-9 in the state of Montana. ESD K-9s are trained to find cellular phones, hard drives, thumb drives, SD cards and any other devices with internal or removable storage. K-9 Cade has training in de-escalation as well as ESD. K-9 Cade has served his entire 5.5-year life training and working to assist others.  Prior to being trained for ESD, K-9 Cade was in training to become a dog to assist individuals with disabilities. Due to K-9 Cade’s extensive training, he assists on case investigation, as well as provides comfort to the staff at the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office.
